Tool Brands

29 06 2009

There are so many tool brands out there that at this precise moment in time, I am completely at a lost as to which brands to trust. I have done lots of different jobs with different people, all using and favouring different brands. I have owned a number of hand tools, power tools accessories etc. and have had different love/hate relationships with each one.

Now as I see it, DEWALT is the tool brand of reference, but surely for a budding property development tycoon I don’t need to be forking out the prices DEWALT demand for reliable tools? But there is nothing more frustrating for me than either not having the right tool for the job in hand or having the right tool break and/or not perform when called upon. Anyway, I digress….tool brands. When I was a kid working with my Dad on doing up the house and helping out with the odd DIY project, I only ever recall three brands: Black & Decker , Bosch and Stanley!

But wandering around B&Q the other day, I was completely lost in the hunt for even the smallest bit of kit. Hitachi, Macallister, Ryobi, Makita, the list is endless! How is a man supposed to keep up?

Anyway, what I am trying to say is, I can never remember the tool industry being this flooded with different brands and it seems that none of them want to make it easier for the ordinary consumer to understand who they are and how they are to be used. Could be an opportunity for one of them to try and stand out and help educate us on the merits of one over the other…..just a thought, in case they are listening/reading. At the very least they would get a quicker decision made from people like me floundering in this unfamiliar territory. And when I think about it, should I really be judging the quality of the tool on the brand image? Well, what other indicators/guides are there??
